Long hours at a desk, constant typing, back-to-back meetings, and repeated lifting are now part of everyday working life. Over time, these pressures can lead to aches, stiffness, and recurring pain if they’re not managed well.
In the UK, around 20.2 million adults or more than one in three people, are living with a musculoskeletal (MSK) condition1. MSK conditions also cost the country over 30 million working days every year and account for nearly 30% of GP consultations2.
Because these conditions can affect anyone, regardless of job title, consulting MSK physiotherapy experts to learn what causes them and how early intervention is essential.

Top 10 MSK Conditions
MSK conditions develop for many reasons, which can be due to poor posture, heavy workloads and repetitive movements. Many workers face the same MSK challenges, and understanding them can help explain why certain symptoms keep returning.
1. Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain is one of the most common MSK problems people deal with. It often develops from long hours of sitting, especially with poor posture, as well as lifting incorrectly or carrying heavy items in an awkward, one-handed way.
For many workers, this can make it harder to focus, move comfortably, or stay at work consistently. Physiotherapy helps by easing tension, improving joint flexibility, and teaching healthier movement habits. With hands-on treatment, tailored exercises, and simple ergonomic tips, people often feel more stable and comfortable again over time.
2. Neck Pain
Neck pain is often linked to desk work, poorly placed screens, or too much time on phones. Over time, it can lead to stiffness, headaches, and difficulty turning your head, which can interfere with everyday tasks.
Physiotherapy can help by easing the discomfort so you can move more freely, then guiding you through simple neck strengthening and stretching exercises. Your physio will also teach helpful habits to stop the pain from coming back.
3. Shoulder Impingement
Shoulder impingement happens when the tendons become irritated, often from repeated overhead tasks or doing the same movement all day. Most workers feel the pain at the front of the shoulder, especially when lifting their arm, reaching, lying on that side, or moving the arm behind their back.
A physio can help reduce the discomfort with mobilisation, massage, strengthening exercises, and posture support. In some cases, they may also recommend discussing a cortisone or local anaesthetic injection for additional relief.
4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on a nerve in the wrist, which can lead to discomfort, tingling, or numbness in the hand. It’s especially common in people who repeat the same wrist movements or grip tools tightly, such as carpenters, sewers, drivers, assembly line workers, or anyone who types for long periods.
When it comes to treatment, physiotherapy aims to ease tension, improve wrist mobility, and teach nerve-gliding exercises that help ease pressure on the median nerve.
5. Tendinitis
Tendinitis usually develops from repeating the same movement over and over, whether at work or during hobbies. It often causes a dull ache, tenderness, or mild swelling where the tendon meets the bone.
Treatment often includes exercises to improve movement, reduce irritation, and strengthen the tendon over time. Your physio might also look at other areas, such as the shoulder, to make sure nothing else is adding to the issue.
6. Knee Pain
Knee pain affects people in all kinds of jobs, especially when sitting too long, wearing the wrong type of shoes, or suddenly increasing activity at work.
If you’re dealing with knee pain, you may notice it most when climbing stairs or walking longer distances. Physiotherapy can help with this by reducing stiffness, improving movement, and using taping or a brace for added support whenever necessary.
7. Sciatica
When the sciatic nerve is irritated, it can lead to pain or tingling that runs from the lower back or buttocks down the leg. This can make long periods of sitting, standing, or moving around uncomfortable for many workers.
Physiotherapy services can support recovery by improving mobility, reducing nerve pressure, and teaching exercises that improve spinal and hip movement.
8. Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis affects the foot’s connective tissue, often causing sharp heel pain. It’s common in workers who stand or walk for long hours, especially on hard surfaces.
Because of this ongoing strain, the area can become tight and sensitive. Physiotherapy can help by combining stretching and hands-on treatment with supportive options like taping or insoles, which work together to ease pressure and improve movement.
9. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)
RSI develops from repeating the same movement again and again, and it often affects the shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists, or hands. As the strain builds up, symptoms like aching, stiffness, tingling, or mild swelling can slowly appear.
A physiotherapist can help you move more comfortably by restoring your range of motion and strengthening the muscles around the irritated area. They’ll guide you through gentle exercises that ease pain and support better posture.
10. Postural Issues
Long hours at a desk or slouching through the day can lead to discomfort across several areas, especially when your workspace isn’t set up in a way that supports proper posture.
Physiotherapy helps by improving movement, strengthening posture muscles, and using gentle manual therapy to release tension. With the right guidance, maintaining a healthier posture throughout the day becomes far more manageable.
