Where Does the Grand National Sit Amongst the Greatest UK Sporting Events?

It’s fair to say that everyone has their own unique memories and traditions when it comes to the Grand National.

Whether it’s making the pilgrimage to the Aintree racecourse and witnessing the action first-hand, or gathering family and friends to watch the race at home and predict your respective winners, the Grand National is one of those special occasions that bring the entire country together in the spirit of sport.

Indeed, there are a number of sporting occasions that are woven into the fabric of British culture. Even if you’re not necessarily a massive fan of sports, these are the events that cause you to sit up and take notice anyway.

So, as the British public counts down the days and begins to analyze the Grand National bet market, let’s take a look at why the race is so special, and the other sporting events that enjoy such wide popularity in the UK.

The Grand National

It’s undoubtedly the history of the Grand National that makes it so well-loved by the British public. Race has been taking place in some form since the mid-19th century, and that sense of prestige that has built up over the years is more tangible than ever.

There is also the fact that the Grand National is a very easy event to understand and take part in. It’s a simple case of predicting which horse you think will finish first, and that accessibility makes it perfect for gathering friends and family to watch it. You don’t have to be a racing expert, or to have analyzed the form guides, to enjoy all that is great about the Grand National!

Wimbledon

Another sporting event very close to British hearts is Wimbledon. There is something so comfortingly familiar about the bright green grass courts of SW19, and to turn on your TV in July each year and see the action taking place is to know that it’s summer.

Wimbledon is also a fantastic event to attend, with so much going on across the various courts. Who doesn’t like a glass of Pimm’s and a generous helping of strawberries and cream? There are a few better ways to enjoy a sporting event!

The FA Cup Final

Similarly to the Grand National, many people will have their own special memories and traditions when it comes to the FA Cup Final. Although the status of this particular football match has lessened slightly in recent times, there’s still something special about watching all the build-up to the match on FA Cup Final Saturday.

In days gone by, the FA Cup Final would have been the only football match broadcast live on television in the UK, and that special sense of occasion has continued into the present day, even if live football coverage is a lot more widespread.

As soon as you hear ‘Abide With Me’ being sung in front of the Wembley crowd, you know you’re witnessing a little piece of history, and that’s why these sporting events are so adored across the country.
