League Highlights: A Quick Recap of the 2022-2023 NFL Season

The 2022-2023 National Football League (NFL)Season began on September 8, 2022. It was the 103rd season of the NFL. The regular season ended on January 14, and the Super Bowl LVII concluded on February 12 at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

This season was very memorable for a lot of reasons. It had a lot of player movements and league changes. The regular season and postseason were intense. Most importantly, the Super Bowl was very competitive. Undoubtedly, experts, bettors, and even casual fans were on the edge of their seat game after game.

But did you really catch everything that happened in the fields? If not, let’s quickly recap the league highlights of the 2022-2023 NFL Season.

Player Movement

During the 2022-2023 NFL Season, big players were involved in trades, free agency signings, and retirement announcements. Since many transactions are happening in the league, and many of them happen very fast, there are times when it’s hard to keep up.

Luckily, subscribing to the FanDuel NFL news helps you keep track of the different player movements of the season.

Trades

One of the season’s biggest trades was the Denver Broncos’ trading for quarterback Russel Wilson. They went from having the NFL’s worst quarterback to having one of the best. The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks for a package that included draft picks and several players.

Another trade that made waves was the wide receiver Davante Adams acquisition by the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams previously played for the Green Bay Packers. Unfortunately, after they re-signed another star player, the Packers didn’t have enough resources to sign Adams for a long-term deal. This resulted in the shocking trade of Adams to the Raiders for the 2022 first- and second-round pick.

The third biggest trade of the season was the Los Angeles Chargers trade with the Chicago Bears. The Chargers acquired edge defender Khalil Mack from the Bears in this trade. Adding Mack to the team makes the Chargers’ offense much better, as he is now paired with franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.

Free Agency

The biggest winner in the free-agency frenzy is the Cincinnati Bengals. Going to the offseason, the Bengals needed the offensive line since it was their liability. The team addressed this issue by signing Alex Cappa to a four-year, $40 million deal and Ted Karras to a three-year, 18 million deal. The Bengals now have a solid interior offensive line with the two signings.

The Los Angeles Rams made another solid free agency signing. Even though they lost edge defender Von Miller, they added to the team wide receiver Allen Robinson II. The signed player is expected to be a dominant, trustworthy receiver for the Rams.

Retirements

One of the biggest retirement announcements came from the NFL’s best player ever. Quarterback Tom Brady, a fifteen-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro announced that the 2022-2023 season will be his last. He currently holds the record for most Super Bowl wins at seven. He was also a three-time NFL MVP. His 23-year career was with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Another NFL legend in the person of wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald also retired. He was an eleven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro. During his 18-year career, he only played with the Arizona Cardinals, where he won the 2016 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

Tight End Rob Gronkowski also retired for the second time. He was a five-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro. He also won three Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots and one Super Bowl championship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Team Name Change

During the start of the 2022-2023 NFL Season, the former Washington Redskins announced that their new name was Washington Commanders. For the past two seasons, they used the placeholder Washington Football Team. The change in the name was due to the racial innuendos associated with their previous name.

Deaths

On August 24, Super Bowl IV champion, MVP, and Hall of Famer Len Dawson died at 87. He played 19 seasons in the league. He was a one-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-AFL, and six-time ALF All-Star.

Hall of Famer Franco Harris also died during the season. He passed away on December 20 at the age of 72. He played for 13 seasons as the running back with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and four-time Super Bowl champion.

Regular and Postseason

The season started with the defeat of the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams to the Buffalo Bills during the NFL Kickoff Game. Their defeat was already a foreshadowing of the upcoming season. After the regular season, the Los Angeles Rams failed to reach the postseason with a dismal 5-12 record.

Both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles finished the regular season with the best record at 14-3, earning them first seed in their respective postseason playoff bracket. The third-seed Minnesota Vikings were stunned by the sixth-seeded New York Giants in the NFC wildcard playoffs. While the third-seeded Cincinnati Bengals unexpectedly crushed the second-seed Buffalo Bills in the AFC divisional playoffs.

Super Bowl LVII

Super Bowl LVII was extremely competitive. The AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs defeated the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 38-35. The Eagles went into halftime up 24-14, but the Chiefs mounted an aggressive comeback. They won the game through the game-winning field goal kick by Harrison Butker.

Conclusion

The 2022-2023 season was indeed an eventful NFL Season. Many teams made aggressive and subtle player movements, trades, and signings. This season also marked the end of the careers of soon-to-be hall of famers, including the player considered the greatest of all time.

The regular and postseason were eventful. It saw the defending champion not reaching the postseason. At the same time, the postseason saw some upset wins. The Super Bowl LVII was very intense and competitive. It was one of the closest and most exciting Super Bowls in recent memory.
