dimple on the cheek

How many of you go crazy by looking at those beautiful dimples of your favorite hero?

Have you ever wondered if these dimples could be the source of good luck for a person? Oh, yes, I am talking sense, as many people believe strongly in this myth.

They say that a dimple on the cheek is a sign of luck. Moreover, some villages also celebrate the birth of a person with such dimples. Indeed, it is a fascinating folk belief.

However, I personally believe that dimples are a lot more related to attractiveness rather than luck. You can come across many stars around the world with dimples. Be it British actress Carey Mulligan or Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan, their dimples personify their beauty.

Let us eliminate your confusion and express the real Dimple Story. Are you ready to gear up?

  • Historical Origins of the Myth Connecting Dimples and Luck
  • Is there any truth to this belief?

  • Psychological Benefits of Dimples

What are dimples, and what causes them?

Almost everybody appreciates a dimple on the cheek. However, biologically there is no miracle involved in the dimple. It is just a muscular action that forms a dent in the cheeks when a person smiles.

However, you will find it more among the babies. The little ones do not have teeth in the first phase of their life. So, the baby fat results in cute dimples as they laugh or smile.

Many of them retain the dimples after growing up too; while some will experience the disappearance of the dimples due to the hard structure of their facial muscles.

Although the dimples look cute, do you know they are signs of imperfections on your cheeks? Yes, they are the results of irregular facial muscle growth. This muscle remains short as the embryo develops after birth.

Therefore, if a person with such short muscles smiles, he or she will experience a compelling pulling of the lips. The skin will automatically stretch leading to the dimples.

In medical terms, the condition of having dimples is known as Fovea buccalis. They exist because of the defective subcutaneous tissues. Hence, the person with dimples will have indented skin on the cheeks.

Historical Origins of the Myth Connecting Dimples and Luck

dimple on the cheek

The belief that dimples are luck is not a new concept. It dates back centuries and has several stories connected with it. Gradually, the myth became a strong belief among multiple cultures of this world, especially through folklore. You can find such myths in many places in Ireland, China, etc.

The locals of various villages think that dimples are directly associated with charm and good luck. Furthermore, they also believe that dimples can bring in property and attract mystical powers.

So, they consider the people with dimples with much respect thinking that they possess special powers. However, this concept is not so strong in the urban areas.

Is there any truth to this belief?

Now, the question is whether the folklore saying dimples bring luck is true or not. Apart from the rural people, you will find such theories in many kinds of literature too.

They connect dimples with innocence and heroic deeds. Therefore, in old times, many thought that people with dimples were stronger and more heroic than others.

However, biology considers it only as an imperfect muscle condition. Similarly, you will not find any relevance of the luck charm concept in any scientific theory or study. We cannot thus conclude that dimples and luck are connected. It is still a myth, with no practical evidence.

I have seen many people with dimples not being very successful in life. It is better to consider it only as an intriguing myth.

Famous Dimpled Celebrities- Are They Really Luckier?

Majority of the famous celebrities have attractive smiles, primarily for their dimples. Do you think all of them are luckier because of these indented cheek muscles? Well, it can be a coincidence or a belief for many.

However, in practical terms, these stars are successful in their careers due to their hard work and perseverance. No dimple can turn you into a king from a pauper if you do not struggle hard.

Let me start with the famous British actress Carey Mulligan. In 2009, she got a nomination for the Academy Award in the category of Best Actress, for her excellent performance in “An Education”.

Similarly, the smile of Mario Lopez, the famous TV personality with dimples, won the hearts of hundreds of girls. We also have the Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan from India in this group.

The amazing dimples on both his cheeks are the most captivating factor of his charming personality. Presently, he is recognized as one of the finest actors in this world.

The trends of all these artists can compel you to think that a dimple on the cheek can indeed do magic. They are the biggest lucky charm for these celebrities. However, you can also come across people who are not so successful but have dimples, like I said from my personal experience.

Think positive if you have dimples. However, please do not stop working hard because of that. After all, the saying says God helps those only who are ready to help themselves.

Psychological Benefits of Dimples

Dimples come with a lot of mysteries. This content aims at unfolding only a few of them to dig out the secrets of these dents on the cheeks. Therefore, it is time to unveil the psychological benefits of the dimples.

As per the folk belief, you have understood by now that dimples and luck are interconnected. Basically, they are now a part of the psyche of these common people.

Hence, it is not unnatural to say that dimples have several psychological benefits. According to numerous cultures, dimples symbolize heroism. On the other hand, many consider them to be the lucky charm of their lives.

However, the most natural psychology is dimples make a person more charming and attractive.

If the majority of people want to perceive dimples to be the lucky factor, it is a sign of a positive attitude. Such psychological benefits give people more confidence to proceed toward their goals. Therefore, we can say that a dimple on the cheek is a Good Trait.

Conclusion

Dimples can exist on one cheek or both cheeks, depending on the facial muscle conditions of a person. Moreover, you may witness a baby with dimples on both cheeks grown up with only one dimple. So, the existence of dimples on the cheek is purely a medical phenomenon.

Considering this natural condition to be a sign of luck or appreciation, is only a myth. It is true that most stars have dimples and thus occupy a prominent position in the hearts of thousands of followers. However, that is only a coincidence.

If you want to believe in the myth that a dimple on the cheek brings good luck, you are always free to do so. The psychological benefits ensure that dimples bring only positivity. So, they are indeed a source of happiness for many.
