We all want our day-to-day to run more smoothly. The goal is to wake up with a clear schedule and a road map of what is ahead. Of course, we always hope to steer clear of pitfalls and work seamlessly with our teammates. While this may sometimes seem unachievable, there are ways to help your business operate more smoothly.

As a business leader, it’s up to you to set the pace for your team. Implementing a sensible process from the start can be a game-changer for your team. Everyone on the team should know what they are responsible for daily and how to achieve it. They must also understand how their individual contributions help the business as a whole.

Working together seamlessly will move the entire business forward. As a leader, the key is to fill your tool kit with different strategies to implement at certain times. Not sure where to start? Here are three ways to help your business run more smoothly.

Work With Your Teammates, Not Against Them

Pre-pandemic, it was largely expected that employees would be in their office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Working from home was atypical unless you were in a specific remote role. Meetings were generally held in person and in conference rooms. Email was the primary means of internal communication, and Zoom calls were reserved for external business meetings. Teams saw each other face-to-face daily and projects were done in person, collaboratively.

What a difference just two years make! In today’s world, being remote is practically the new norm. A hybrid work environment is standard protocol. Zoom and other video platforms are used daily, oftentimes multiple times a day. With these changes, it’s important for you as a leader to work with your team and consider their individual needs. This also means adjusting to having your employees work on projects from various physical locations and time zones.

Working in this way can help your business run more smoothly by allowing your employees more flexibility in their work. This is called asynchronous collaboration, and it is crucial for both globally diverse teams as well as locally distributed ones.

Your employees don’t need to gather together in real-time to get a project done. They can work during their chosen hours, relaying important information to other teammates via various communication channels. This type of flexible collaboration also increases employee morale and thus helps your entire business run more smoothly.

    Don’t Micromanage

As a business leader, one of the most beneficial characteristics you should learn early on is delegation. This can be difficult, as you might have a large personal and emotional investment in the company you’re working for. You may think it easier to complete a task yourself instead of enlisting someone on your team to do it. That said, this won’t benefit the company’s future or your own goals as a leader.

Micromanaging is detrimental to a company’s business and overall work environment. Nobody likes somebody watching over their shoulder, especially at work. It creates a sort of bottleneck for your team when they must go through you before moving anything forward. This ultimately generates more work for you and slows down the entire team. A simple solution to avoid this situation is to delegate.

Think of delegating as outsourcing tasks to teammates who either have the capacity or the ability to develop particular skills. Giving someone autonomy puts the ball in their hands, providing them a sense of responsibility. They will likely complete the tasks they’re given more successfully than you ever could have due to constraints on your time. This helps your business run more smoothly while also building up your employees’ self-esteem.

Automate — and Avoid Staying Comfortable

We all get comfortable — not to say complacent — from time to time. We know what works and we stick with it. The problem with staying comfortable in your business operations is that you often will miss opportunities to optimize productivity. Your team may take longer than necessary to complete a task, just because that’s the way you’ve always done it. Using technological advances to automate your processes can significantly help your business and team run more smoothly.

Think about payroll. There was a time when payroll was done with pen and paper, and checks were distributed in person or by mail. Imagine if your business didn’t move toward payroll software? Think of the amount of time and energy wasted on something that technology can essentially do for you. Take this example as a learning point for you to move outside of your comfort zone.

Now, this doesn’t mean you need to enlist every new app or platform for your business. That wouldn’t help any business run more smoothly. However, it’s important to research new technological advancements that may be beneficial for your business. This could be anything from a platform that assists with remote onboarding to software for posting on social media. By enlisting technology help to streamline everyday tasks, you’ll optimize your business operations.

    Takeaways

As a leader, your team is looking to you constantly to make the business function effectively. This can be a lot of pressure, no matter how established you are in your career. Enlisting these three principles — asynchronous collaboration, delegation, and automation — will ensure your team and business are running as smoothly as possible.
