What Will The Adoption of Sports Betting in The US Mean for Sports Fans

Sports betting in the US has only recently emerged from the shadow of the law. Where it was previously federally illegal to bet on sports, now that law has been repealed, and more and more states are opening their residents up to the sports betting world. As you can imagine, this is like bringing about big changes for sports fans in the US.

But how exactly are things going to change for sports fans in the US, now that more and more areas are adopting sports betting? There are a number of ways of looking at this question, so let’s get started.

End of illegal betting

Naturally, one of the biggest changes that will arise is the virtual end of illegal betting. While it will not disappear entirely overnight, the overwhelming majority of bettors will prefer to bet legally through the proper channels. Illegal operations will become stretched at best, and non-existent at worst.

In 2020, around 52% of US sports bettors bet on the illegal market. That said, around 82% of those that did were actually unaware the site they were using was illegal. It’s estimated roughly $140 billion is laundered through illegal betting operations each year.

So, the adoption of sports betting, if nothing else, will mean the end of the unwitting use of illegal sites.

Choice and variety in betting operators

Following on from that, as betting develops and more and more operations are opened up, there will be endless choices and variety for the consumer. This has been played out in many other countries in the world. In the UK, there are around 2,400 different licensed betting operators.

With US sports bettors having greater choice and variety, competition will become fiercer. This is always good for the consumer and leads to fantastic promotions as well as all niches of every betting market are covered.

The choice will become far greater with sports betting made legal.

Fair betting

The other important thing is the issue of fairness. Regulators always ensure that the services the operators provide are fair to the players. This isn’t always guaranteed if the betting company isn’t regulated. Indeed, they may only be out to take your money without ever having any real, mathematical chance to win your money back.

With betting made legal, regulations can be implemented for the basic expectations of fairness. Obviously, this means that sports can have a harmless bet without worrying they are simply throwing away their money to an unfair system.

Market Variety

There are around 1,245 total sports teams, clubs, and groups in the United States across a great many different sports. While you of course have the most popular ones such as baseball, football, and basketball, there are many more which can be covered by a free and legal betting industry. With only illegal betting markets, only the biggest events will be covered.

Betting companies could even offer markets on international sporting events, as seen in the UK where sites like Findbettingsites show that new betting companies often specialise in particular sports. The point is, with legal sports betting, there are far more markets for you to bet in. This means you can find a different niche, or even bet on a great many different sports.

Increase in sports revenue

Finally, there can be little doubt that introducing legal betting will increase the overall revenue of the sports industry as a whole. Through partnerships and promotions, the two industries can support one another and prop each other up, and this is great for overall profits.

The increase in revenue will lead to more events and promotions, and simply more to get your teeth into with betting in the US.

Sports may already make a great deal of money in the US—around $16.9 billion per year—but there is always space for more.

So, doubtless, the adoption of sports betting in the US means big things for sports fans. Even if you do not want to bet, the introduction of sports betting will likely mean big changes to major sports. Sponsorships, partnerships, promotional campaigns—the US will doubtless follow suit with many other countries in this regard. Otherwise, it simply means your betting is about to get a lot more interesting!
