A long time ago, toilets and bathrooms were separated into different spaces. The bathroom was viewed as a solely utilitarian area, people would go to relieve their personal hygiene; whilst toilets were places to wash the body after you’re done. Fast forward to today, and ensuite bathrooms are all the rage –– who doesn’t love a bathroom that’s incorporated into a bedroom, allowing you to enjoy the best of security and comfort? You know what they say –– the bigger the better, right?Having a big and spacious ensuite is the status symbol of luxurious living. There are so many newly furnished ensuites that are so extravagant, they’re often mistaken for live-in retreats for couples. These ensuites come fully equipped with his-and-her basins, twin showers, specially partitioned areas for the toilet, lounge area, dressing areas, and a bidet! In some cases, some ensuites even provide entertainment facilities, such as top-notch sound and television systems.
If you’re thinking of improving your ensuite, how about either expanding it into the size of a small bedroom (3.2 square meters all around) or converting an old room into an ensuite? We recommend the latter, especially if you don’t want to spend that extra dollar. Pro Tip: Remember to set the existing fixtures and fittings onto a wall that connects to an existing wet room though –– a kitchen or bathroom, for example –– so that the ensuite can latch onto the existing plumbing pipes.
Not all ensuites need to be grand… you can still have a creative, fantastic-looking ensuite even if space is tight. Imagine this: a fully functioning, elegant ensuite fitted snugly into an attic space measuring 3m by 1m, with a grand ceiling that stretches from the top to the floor. Beautiful, right? Even in its tight position, this ensuite comes equipped with a toilet, a shower, and a central basin.
When looking to install a small ensuite, you’ll require a minimum floor area of 3 square meters (or 32 square feet). Mirrors are a great addition to give your ensuite the illusion of being larger, by reflecting the space beyond the perimeters.
It’s not a must to get separate bath showers if you don’t have space for it. Why not install a shower head along with the bathtub, so that you’re able to shower and take a lounge in the same area? Those who are interested, do take note that this installation works best with rectangular-shaped rooms, as the bathtub needs to be wide enough to accommodate the extra showerhead. The wall facing the bathtub would need to be at least 150 centimetres high or more too, to fit the length of a small bathtub.
Here’s a suggestion: whilst most people install a glass screen to prevent water spillage when showering, how about opting for a screen on a hinge that you can pivot in and outwards? This would save on the inconvenience, as compared to climbing over the glass screen when moving in and out of the tub.
If you don’t have enough space, consider opting for a shower instead of a bathtub –– it’ll take up way less space and is much easier to squeeze into tight spaces! One way to make a smaller ensuite look larger is to tile the entire area with the same flooring, including the showering area.
Choosing a custom-designed bathtub can be useful in complementing the size of your ensuite. If your ensuite can’t fit a typical horizontal-shaped bathtub, try selecting a sit-in-styled bathtub instead. Although you won’t be able to recline as you would in a normal bathtub, your body would still be able to lounge and relax within the sit-in tub! Here’s a pro tip: why not install some steps into the sit-in tub, or sink the tub into the floor to provide a sturdy footing to get in and get out of.
One way to give an illusion of a bigger ensuite is to maximize your space with the right fixtures. Though you’re not able to skimp on the basics –– such as having hot and cold water, a shower, a toilet, and a basin –– selecting certain fixtures will help to free up space within your ensuite. Choosing to install your shower head on the ceiling and mounting taps on the wall are great ways to free up your surface area and keep things clutter-free! Additionally, we recommend having a frameless glass shower wall (instead of an opaque surface) to make your bathroom seem more spacious.
Having a small ensuite is not the end of your grand dreams. You can still store that makeup product, your array of soaps, and even your bathroom essentials if you plan your storage area properly. We suggest installing either medicine or overhead cabinets –– handy storage areas concealed behind mirrored, knob-free doors –– which give the illusion of a clutter-free room, yet being able to provide you with ample storage space.
One clever way to do this is to incorporate the cabinets as part of the room, by running them from wall to wall. Fix them with mirrored surfaces so that they can double up as a makeup mirror too! Another innovative storage tip is to install a cabinet either on the wall next to the bath (for the perfect glass display shelf look) or above the toilet and surrounded by the bath (for the cutest recessed niche).
