What Is Runtime Error & What Causes It & How to Fix It

What Is Runtime Error and Its Causes

Unlike compilation errors that occur during a program compilation, a runtime error is an error that only happens in the executing process of a program or an application. It is an error that developers have expected but cannot correct.

When a program is running or in its runtime, some issues happen to it and cannot be solved. Then runtime error will be triggered. That is to say, it’s the fault of the software, not the operating system.

According to user reports, the runtime error is related to Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. It is probable that you encounter the runtime error C++ when opening Windows Explorer. In this case, you can repair or reinstall Visual C++ Runtime.

Here are some factors that can result in the run time error.

  • Conflicts between terminate and stay resident programs
  • Issues caused by running applications
  • Memory issues
  • Poor programming
  • Other software problems
  • Outdated or damaged hardware
  • Malicious applications such as computer viruses or adware
  • Not enough storage space
  • Insufficient system resources for running applications normally

When runtime errors happen to you, the window that contains the specific error message will pop up. Don’t worry! Here are some solutions for you to fix it.

Fix 1: Remove Intel True Key

It is said that Intel True Key sometimes will interfere with some elements of the operating system and cause the C++ runtime error. If so, you can remove it from your computer entirely. Here’s what to do.

  • Step 1: Press the Win plus I keys to open Windows Settings, and then click on Apps.
  • Step 2: Scroll down the right side of the pop-up page to find the Intel True Key. Then click on it.
  • Step 3: Choose the Uninstall button and click Yes in the warning window.
  • Step 4: Wait for the software to be uninstalled completely. After that, check if the runtime error still exists.

Fix 2: Conduct a Clean Boot

Only necessary services and applications will be loaded in a clean boot. All third-party applications will be prevented during the clean boot. Therefore, if there is any conflict between applications and Visual C++ software, this method helps.

  • Step 1: Log in to the computer with an Administrative account.
  • Step 2: Open the Run dialogue window by pressing Win and R keys, and then type MSConfig in the Run window.
  • Step 3: Then the System Configuration window will pop up. After that, go to the Services tab and uncheck Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all and click on OK to save changes.
  • Step 4: Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  • Step 5: Click on the Startup button in Task Manager.
  • Step 6: Right-click applications that are in Enabled status from the list, and then choose Disable option from the elevated menu.
  • Step 7: Then, restart your computer. Now, your PC is in a Clean Boot state. Check if the runtime error is fixed.

If the error is solved, the third-party applications are the root cause. You can find out the exact application that leads to runtime errors by enabling the disabled applications one by one until the error happens again. If the error is not fixed, you should enable all the applications back by following the above steps.

Fix 3: Get Enough Storage Space

As mentioned earlier, insufficient storage space can also lead to runtime errors. Hence, you can check your disk space usage and find what’s taking up space when the runtime error C++ occurs. You can click here to find what’s taking up space on your hard drive and solutions to free up disk space.

Fix 4: Run Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

If the run time error occurs when opening Windows Explorer, you can follow the steps below to fix it.

  • Step 1: Press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to end the present Windows Explorer process, and then choose the Processes tab.
  • Step 2: Find Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) from the running applications list, and then right-click it and choose End task from the pop-up menu.
  • Step 3: Open the Run window by pressing Win and R keys, and then type MdSched and click OK.
  • Step 4: Click Restart now and check for the option of the problem.
  • Step 5: Then the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool will run automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen to check for and fix any memory issues with your PC.

That’s all the methods for fixing runtime errors on Windows 10. You can pick one randomly to fix it.
