Social media marketing is essential when creating a brand or trying to build a business. It is a powerful tool that can’t be ignored. When it comes to getting the word out, there are few mediums that do as good a job as social media does. However, it is not as easy a nut to crack as one would think.

There are many social media marketing managers who make the same common mistakes that derail their strategies. Sometimes it’s a case of brand awareness falling flat, in other cases it is a disastrous campaign that has the opposite effect than intended.  In this article, we will go over what some of the common mistakes are so you can avoid them.

Treating all platforms the same

There are a lot of social media platforms to choose from and they all offer something different. This is how somebody chooses one over another since they find something that they like about it that others don’t have.

This means that you have to make sure to understand how each of the platforms works so you can decide which one to use and what to ignore. Then, you also need to know how they work so you can create the type of content that people want to see.

That includes trying to use the same post across the different platforms. The media dimensions are likely to be different for each so you will have to use a program to resize image for Instagram, for instance.

Not engaging with your followers

Using some form of automation is important as it would be very difficult to juggle all of the tasks required for the various platforms you are using without it. However, many marketers often over-rely on using automation at the expense of interacting with their followers. If you end up looking like a faceless entity then this will turn people off from your brand.

The key is to find a way to interact with your public and let them know that your brand or company is full of real people that value its followers.

Not finding your ideal audience

There is an avatar of a person that should be created when you are trying to find the right message for social media. This involves trying to create a persona of the typical person who would want to use your product or service. When you can condense your audience into one person then it makes it easier to figure out the messaging for your social media posts.

When you don’t have this figured out then you can waste a lot of time trying to get the messaging right. You also run the risk of not using the right social media network since not everybody uses all of them. Certain platforms attract certain types of users. If you choose one where your ideal customer is not hanging out then you won’t have much success.
