Piercing Trends: Everything You Need to Know

Piercing is one of many ways to express yourself creatively. Every year there are new emerging trends that can be applied to your ear. Fancy a helix piercing or maybe you want to opt for a conch piercing? This post explains which piercing trends are trending and how you can take care of your new piercing. Read on!

What is a piercing?

First, the most important thing, what exactly is a piercing? Is it the same as an earring or a tattoo?
A piercing is made by a hole in a part of your body, perhaps through your ear, in which a piercer will insert a piercing jewel for example a barbell or a stud, which is placed through the cartilage or layer of skin. The famous helix piercing is placed through the cartilage of your ear, while an earring is placed through your earlobe. These piercings are often pierced with a sterile needle, a piercing gun is not recommended but some jewellers still use these to quickly pierce an earlobe. To pierce through cartilage, it will be a harder piece of your ear to simply shoot the piercing through. It is also more sanitary to use a needle.

Does getting a piercing hurt?

A question that gets asked a lot is “Does it hurt to get a piercing?”. The answer is: yes and no. It depends on the person him/herself. Getting poked by a sharp, sterile needle does not sound fun at all but the results afterwards are totally worth it, according to most. If you’re scared of the piercing hurting while getting pierced, it’s definitely recommended to get enough sleep, eat and lower your stress as much as you can. Piercing infections do hurt, in fact, it is one of the symptoms to recognize an infection. If you can feel your heart beating in your ear and it hurts without even being touched, emitting a pus-like fluid, definitely go check it out at a doctor.

So what are the trends now?

Since 2022 has become more focused on individuality and expression, it wouldn’t surprise us if this also came through in the fashion industry, including jewellery and piercings. Through TikTok and influencers, we can see what the people want and what they actually have. Ever seen those filters where people try on virtual piercings and then get them done? It makes it much easier to decide whether you actually want this piercing or not. Now let’s get started!

Ear stacking

Ear stacking is when the ear gets “stacked” with multiple earrings. It makes the ear look full yet interesting to look at. This can happen in a curated way, where the licensed piercer will look at your ear’s anatomy and choose piercings that fit. But be careful, there are only a limited amount of piercings that can be pierced at the same time.

By stacking piercings, there is some sort of harmony coming from it. Either you choose for a whole theme for example “Space”, where you would choose stars and moons as a piercing, making it some sort of united piece on your ear. It is definitely a fun way to start playing around with jewellery and finding something that you think fits you.

Helix piercings

Helix piercings have always been trending, yet this year they will still be. Not only are there helix piercings on the border of the cartilage on your ear but there’s also a ‘flat’ helix piercing which is rather away from the border on a flat piece of cartilage. This piercing makes it fun to have a couple of piercing next to each other, going with the flow of the ear.

Nose piercings

It’s been so long since Covid-19 made wearing mouth masks obligatory, which has hidden much lip- and nose and tongue piercings yet it did not stop people from getting a nose piercing. As restrictions are loosening up, more people opt for something bold and more visible. Getting out of your comfort zone and getting into the nose zone, if I can say so. There are many nose piercings out there, for example, a septum in the middle of the nose or a bridge that goes on top.

Chain piercings

Connecting 2 piercings with a chain has not been seen as much as an industrial piercing, where 2 upper cartilage piercings get connected by a long barbell. A more subtle way of connecting 2 piercings can be by using a small chain. This chain can be used as a piercing or earlobe jewellery piece and definitely will make its way into 2022 somehow.
