How To Install Nerf Bars on Your Truck

If you are thinking about adding nerf running boards to your truck, you will need to be ready to install them. The good news is that many nerf bars are very easy to install, even with basic hand tools. However, it is important to be ready for the process. You don’t want to get your stock running boards off only to realize that you don’t know how to get the aftermarket bars on.

What Are Nerf Bars?

Nerf bars for trucks are a type of sidestep that helps people get into and out of the cabin. Since most trucks and SUVs are fairly tall, having the extra step can be very helpful. Specifically, nerf bars are a meatier design that is, well, a bar. The most basic designs are essentially just a metal pipe or bar connected to brackets on the truck. More complex designs may have divots and texturized footpads.

The purpose of nerf bars is mostly to provide a step into the truck. However, they are also used as a way to protect the side of the truck. This is especially common on off-road trucks that may get hit by debris or branches on trails.

Whats Involved in Installation?

The installation process is often easy for nerf bars. These are the three typical steps:

  1. Prepare: Open the packaging and verify that all the hardware is there and ready. Take a moment to review the instructions and check what tools you will need. Every set of nerf bars is a little different, so it is important to check the instructions.
  2. Mount the Brackets: For most trucks, you can mount your brackets on the factory-drilled holes. However, if your truck does not have these, you will need to make them. Follow the instructions carefully and only use the correct drill and bit to do this job. If necessary, have a professional do it for you. Then, bolt the mounting brackets in place.
  3. Mount the Bars: Once the brackets are securely in place, the rest is easy. You simply need to bolt the nerf bars onto their respective brackets. This can usually be done in a short amount of time with hand tools.

Are All Nerf Bars the Same?

No, not all nerf bars are the same. Many are designed to use the factory mounting holes. Some even bolt right onto factory brackets. However, some nerf bars are a little more complex. They may require complex brackets or special holes.

Think about this before you buy a set. If you want to get an exact look and feature set, you may need to go through a more complex installation process. If you just want something that works, pick an easy option. There is no reason to deal with the hassle of drilling holes.
